Systems thinking approaches are being increasingly applied to areas of healthcare such as quality and redesign. Despite growing recognition of systems thinking in healthcare, implementation of these approaches remain challenging. This article explores integrated care management from a systems perspective to provide the social and technical context required to improve healthcare and develop value in the world of Big Data. Big Data in healthcare not only represents the growth of data, but also the potential value available through use of the data. There are many new business opportunities and technical challenges as a result of Big Data and outcomes can be further improved when combined with the social aspects of healthcare.
While prior research addresses the various components of integrated care management and healthcare information technology, the steps and components required for an Integrated Care Intelligence framework for Big Data management is presented with analysis of management practice in order to identify the social and technical components required for managers to achieve successful outcomes. The Integrated Care Intelligence concept is also introduced, which is a combination of Integrated Care Management and Business Intelligence, and is a well-defined and coordinated set of targeted services delivered to individuals by cooperating care providers across organizations, supported by applications and technologies used to gather, capture, access, consolidate, and analyze information and Big Data to improve decision making.
